Cup with inverted plain rim, tapering body, and carved inset base.
Clay: chalky white, fine-grained.
Glaze: clear, slightly yellowish tone, matte surface; glaze on interior coarsely crackled. Trimmed off at edge of base before firing. Iron wash on base ("chocolate base").
Decoration: in blue-gray underglaze, blackish where thick. Pair of double lines below rim, framing band of hatching; below, wide band of lotus vinescroll, above another double line; elongated petal lappets rising from base.
Mark: none.
Condition: small nick and hairline crack in rim.

(Louise Cort, 3 May 2004) A beaker of the same shape but larger in size (height 13.7 cm, diam. of rim 11.0, diam. of foot 13.3 cm) and decorated in underglaze iron in a similar format, is dated 15th century and belongs to a member of the Tonan Ajia Kotoji Kai (Southeast Asian Antique Ceramics Association) (Machida Shiritsu Hakubutsukan, ed. 1993, no. 139).
