Curatorial Remarks

1. (L.A. Cort, 1 August 1995) "Sukhothai province, Si Satchanalai" added to attribution and date changed from "13th–15th century" to "15th–16th century."

2. (Louise Cort, 15 January 2007) Si Satchanalai small jars of this type, with bands of scallops painted around the shoulder in iron pigment, were recovered from the Ko Kradat shipwreck in the Gulf of Thailand (Green et al. 1981, 13, type 5A). On the evidence of a Jiajing reign mark on a Chinese ceramic found on the wreck, the wreck is dated to the second half of the 16th century. That, plus the strong resemblance to Zhangzhou ware jars of that date (see F1986.37), suggests a date to the 16th century for this jar.

Changed Date from 15th–16th century to 16th century.

3. (Louise Cort, 20 May 2008) Based on her research on shipwrecks, Roxanna Brown dates iron-decorated boxes from the Si Satchanalai kilns to the sixteenth century (circa 1520–1570/84) and describes them as the most common shape of that period (Brown 2004).

4. (R. Anderson per J. Smith, Oct 12, 2010) Transfer of remark from Provenance Field: "Collected by the donor at a shop in Sukhothai, Thailand, in 1964."
