Large celadon bowl

Curatorial Remarks

1. (Louise Cort, 29 May 2008) Don Hein, in Washington to present the Pope Memorial Lecture, identified this bowl as Sawankhalok stoneware from the LASW (Late Stoneware) phase, which he dates early 15th century to circa 1600. He remarked that the shape was a little uncommon and striking in its plainness. Sawankhalok wares with incised decoration required a clay body incorporating primary clay so that no grit would disrupt the carving lines.

Changed Date from 14th–mid 16th century to Early 15th–16th century.
