Description

Bowl with rounded sides, everted rim and carved footring.
Clay: grey stoneware with white impurities; coarse and grainy.
Glaze: clear, medium gloss, transparent; applied over thick creamy white slip, foot and base unglazed.
Decoration: none.

Curatorial Remarks

1. (Louise Cort, 21 May 2008) Based on her research on shipwrecks, Roxanna Brown dates Sukhothai ware bowls of this type to shipwrecks of the sixteenth century, including the Singtai and the Xuande (both circa 1512–1540) (Brown 2004).

Changed Date from 15th–16th century to 16th century.
